Abstract
14,233. Thomas, G. H. June 19. Aerial machines without aerostats ;planes, arrangement and construction of; cars; propelling.-In an aeroplane of the biplane type, the upper plane a extends laterally beyond the lower plane, and the extensions are arranged so that they may be swung forwards and folded down in order to lessen the width of the machine for transport. The rear tail plane s is carried by a s t r u c t u r e comprising upper and lower V-shaped frames u<1>, v<1>, secured together by uprights y and braces. The fusilage k is mounted directly on the lower plane b and provided at its forward end with seats m, n. The enginep and propeller r are mounted at the rear of the fuselage. Steering.-The extensions of the main plane a and the tail plane s are provided with pivoted flaps controlled by the aviator for balancing the machine laterally. A rudder z<1> is mounted at the rear of the tail frame. Aerial machines adapted to travel also on land.- The landing chassis consists of a pair of skids d', each attached to the lower plane by struts d<2>, and provided with a pair of resiliently mounted wheels d<3>. A tail skid z<4> is provided. Wind-deflecting screens, arrangement of.-A windscreen c<1> is placed at the forward extremity of the fuselage k.
