Abstract

10,467. Cameron, J. M. Nov. 3. Progressive evaporators. -Relates to apparatus of the kind comprising a tower with a central revolving shaft, each carrying a series of platforms, the members of the two series alternating. Scrapers f, h are secured on the undersides of one or both sets to act on the platforms beneath, and the material falls through radial apertures in the platforms. Gases may be admitted at the bottom and at other parts r, s; the saturated gases may be passed back to the furnace supplying the drying gas. Material is fed by a pipe k to a rotating trough i, from which it is discharged at intervals through ports i<1>, j<1> and shoots j. Alternatively, the material may be fed from a rotating trough i, Fig. 3, to another rotating radial trough u which is tilted at intervals by a pin or lever v. Or the trough u may be fixed in position, and tilted by a moving tappet or wiper on one of the rotating platforms. The scrapers may be hinged and counterweighted as shown in Fig. 7, or held in place by springs m, Figs. 8, 10, and 11, or they may be made of thin elastic steel as shown in Fig. 9. They may be kept in operation during a portion only of each revolution by employing a tappet or wiper x, Fig. 13, engaging a projection y on the scraper, the counterweight of which normally keeps it out of action. The apparatus is especially intended for sewage and other viscous materials.
