Abstract

9956. Whiteman, W. T., [Fairmount Glass Works]. April 28. Blowing.-In the manufacture of carboys, demijohns, large bottles, &c., the parison 10 is placed in the finishing-mould 20 and allowed to extend by gravity till it touches a movable bottom 21, as shown in Fig. 7. Blowing-air is then admitted to complete the blowing of the upper part of the parison, as shown in Fig. 8. The bottom 21 is then lowered at a gradually increasing speed and the blowing continued to complete the article. The blank 10 is formed in a parison mould, and the initial blow opening 11 is produced by a plunger in the usual way. To prevent this blow opening 11 from collapsing, air is introduced under slight pressure, as soon as the plunger is withdrawn, so as to chill the glass.
