To all whom. t 'may concern: "Be it'known that I, DE lVlir'r Cl Hanru 'roN,- 'ascitizen ot' theUnited States, residing atSapnlpa, county of Creek, andState of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Glassware, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhe present invention relates to the manufacture Voit" glassware, and more particularly to a rncthod of making stemmed articles, such, as goblets.
Ain 'object `ot the invention is to provide a niet-hed whereby the bowl steinof a blown :article can be formed integrally in one operationffroin ay pressed blank. Another objectjof lthe, invention is to provide such a method that enables an increased production, greatlyl Vreduces labor costs and eliminatesall seams in the articles produced. y
Inthe accompanying drawings: l.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a forming or pressingniold, a formed or pressed blank being "shown in the mold;
Figure 2 is a sectional View of a blowing mold, showing the previously formed or pressed'blank in section and the blown article in elevation; and
Figure 3 is an elevation of a completed article.
In carrying out my improved method, I first place a charge of molten glass in the cavity 2 olf a forming or pressing mold 3. This is preferably a block mold inade in one piece, with an ejector et positioned in a recess 5 in its lower end, the ejector having a steinl 6 fitting in the lower, end of the cavity. The upper end of the mold cavity is countersunk indicated at 7, and is formed with a recess 8 to receive a cover 9 having a central bore 10 countersunk at its lower end at i1 to match the eountersink 7. adapted to be inserted into the 'charge in the niold cavity through the bore 10, after the cover is in position to compact the charge and form the hollow bowl portion of the blank. -When the plunger'is inserted in this manner, the glass is forced into the annular recess constituted by the counter-sinks 7 and 11and a bead 13 is formed at the upper end of the blank. v
After the blank has been formed or pressed in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 with an integral stem S as shown, the plunger 12 is withdrawn and the cover removed. The
A plunger 12 is' MANUFACTURE orGnAsswAan. y y ,i
blank is then ejected by ineens oi eclzor i 4 and transferred to the: blowing Inoldgll,
shown in Figure 2. This mold also'. pref?- erably made in one piecewitliran enlarged IOVI cavity 15 of a size cor-responding to that the bowl portieri or" the article to 'bepro-f duced from the blank. The lower endporf 1:
tion 16 vof the cavity isof'the same size as f the corresponding end of the cavity 2, of the forxning orf` pressing mold,-so that theitjnii portion of the blank just fits therein.
Theirnold 14 is provided with 'a sectional r" cover 17, the two parts-ofwhich are hinged to swing on a vertical pin 18 carried by all'adt,4 r `eral projection 19 integral with the upper end portion of the blow mold. The sections oi the cover are 'formed with?. a ribr20 i to have. interlocking engagement with ,afrib two partsY of the cover, are brought togethe'r.;
. will-,be understoodthat the rcover isp'r'o ,I vidediwith suitableineans/or'lockingtlie l parts thereofin closed position. Tha-cover Ilower end of the stern rests on a block fitting a recess 26 in the lower end of the inold. When the blank is'in the position shown, blowing duid, as for example coinpressed air, is introduced into the cavity 27 of the blank and the bowl nportion ot' the blankv expanded into conforming relationwith the walls of the cavities 15 and 22 in the mold and its cover, thereby forming the` bowl portion or" the blank to the size and shape desired. After this step, the cover 17 is iopened and the blown blankrernoved. The top portion of the blank having the bead 13 is then cracked oil along the line l28, and a base or :toot 29 is cast on the lower end lof the stern in the 'usual ina-nner, thus producing the finished article Aillustrated in Figure 3.
The advantages of my invention are that it provides a method whereby the bowl part and the stein of a blown article can be formed integrally from a .pressed blank in one-operation, and with a one-piece mold, thereby eliminating all seams such as found on',articles produced-. in. jointed molds.
.Mo1eo'ver,I machines can be used in cfarryng out -the l steps'otfthe method toV increase the production andpgreatly reduce `labor costs.
-While ."I have'described. a 4I'Jreferred man-A fnenof'ear ing' 'out my method and have .shown suitfiii le apparatuswhich may be used inparrying'outthe steps thereof, it will be understood that the invention is not limited V fto thedetails di'sclosed,'but may be varied of the appended claims. `I'claim;
1. .The method 'ticle' of glassware, ycomprising placing a .charge of molten `glass in the-cavity 'of a 0 blank forming m d, inserting -a plunger vinto saidlcavity to ,'o'rm'the bowl portion of the blank having an integral stem depending therefrom, withdrawing the plunger, removingthe blalifrom the forming mold and placing it-in a pnepiece blowing mold,v and v lowing the b'owl"portion of the blank into j ",.the desired form, substantially as described.
'2; The method of making a stemmed arl'ticleof. glassware,` comprlsing placing a charge of molten glass in the cavity of a of making a stemmed arone-piece mold, inserting a plunger into saidl cavity to iorm the' bowl portion of theblank having an integral stem depending Vthere-' from, withdrawing the plunger, removing I the blank from the forming lmold and placing it in a one-piece blowing mold, and blow'- desired form, substantially as described.-
3. The method of making a stemmed article `of glassware, omprisin'g forming a blank with av stem portion and a hollow bowl portion, placing said blank in a one-piece blowing mold, and blowing the bowl por- Y .tion of said blank to the desired form, substantially asgdescribed.
4. vThe method of making a stemmed article of glassware, 'comprising pressing a blank with a stem portion and a hollow' bowl yportion in a one-,piece mold, removing thepressed vblank from said mold and placing it in aonepiece blowing mold, blowing the bowl portion of said blank to the desired es 'ing the bowi portion of the blank into the j nnwrrr HAMILTON. f i
