7729. Auld & Sons, D., Auld, J., and Graham, J. April 2. Pressure-regulating valves.-Relates to pressure-regulating check valves for use in connexion with the launching of torpedoes. The valve comprises a main valve 1, Fig. 1, balanced by a piston 9 controlled by a spring 11, and opening automatically when a launching-valve admits air to the inlet 3 of the regulating- valve. The invention consists in combining therewith a non-return valve 12 in a duct 13, at the back of the piston, and a pilot valve 14 controlled by the air pressure in the outlet 4 of the main valve The pilot valve is guided and controlled by pistons 16, 17, a spring 21, and a diaphragm 18 in such a manner that any excess pressure in the outlet 4 opens the valve 14, which relieves the pressure at the back of the piston 9 and causes the main valve 1 to close wholly or in part, whereas, when the outlet pressure is insufficient, the valve 14 closes, and air leaks past the piston 9, accumulates in the chamber 10, and opens the valve 1 wider. In a modification, Fig. 2, the launching-valve is replaced by a three-way cock 26 which allows the air containers to be charged through the ports 27, 28 from high-pressure bottles provided with reducing-valves and, when turned to connect the ports 28, 31, admit compressed air to the back of the piston 9 to open the valve 1. In this case, a disk 30 is provided on the piston 9 to prevent leakage past it until the valve 1 is opened.
