Abstract

4021. Kilburn, B. E. D., [Office Appliance Manufacturing Co.]. Feb. 17. Damping-machines.-Relates to machines for closing envelopes, and includes special means for damping the flaps as the envelopes are fed through the machine. A stack of envelopes is placed on a table 10 and rests partly on the end of a cylinder 46 carried by a vertical bearing 45. When the cylinder is rotated, fingers pivoted within it are projected and open the flap of the lowermost envelope and turn it down to be gripped between the cylinder and a co-operating roller 88 which feed the envelope from the stack. A damping-roller 43 and a co-acting roller 94 then seize the flap, damp it, and feed the envelope to the sealing-rollers. The lower end of the damping-roller 43, Fig. 6, is situated in a water-trough 23 and spiral grooves 100 around the roller convey water to the top thereof which applies it to the flaps. A plate 101 carried by an arm 103 partly surrounds the roller and is provided with spiral grooves internally, which are preferably inclined in the opposite direction to the grooves 100 on the roller 43 and assist the water to rise in them. The roller 94 is carried by a plate 89 held by a leaf-spring 97. The roller 43 is rotated by the chain gearing shown in Fig. 2 from a hand-turned shaft 24, or from a motordriven shaft 29.
