Abstract
175,467. Rogers, F. H., (Standard Envelope Sealer Manufacturing Co.). Dec. 6, 1920. Damping - machines. - In an envelopeclosing machine, the envelopes are piled face downwards in a holder 29 and are fed from it by an india-rubber conveyer band 20, the passage of more than one envelope at a time being prevented by a flexible stop 76 mounted so that its edge adjacent the fold of the envelope flaps is curved more abruptly that its opposite edge, which results in a rubbing action that does not tend to form a new folding line between the flap and the body of the envelopes. The envelopes are held on the band 20 by a spring strip 85 while the flaps are raised by a blade 92 pressed upon a damping-roller 95 by a pivoted arm 106. The rear of the envelope pile in the holder 29 rests on a triangular support 36 which is slidably adjustable to suit the length of the envelopes and is held by a spring 37. The conveyer rollers 10 are barrel shaped and are mounted, as shown in Fig. 4, upon studs 7 fixed at one end only in the machine frame. One of the rollers 10 is provided with an inset india-rubber band 24, Fig. 3, against which bears under the action of a spring 25, the roughened shaft of an electric motor 21 which is pivoted at 22 to the machine frame. Instead of this electric drive the rollers may be rotated by a hand-crank 18 which is inserted through the hollow stud 7 and screwed into a plate 14 at one end of the roller. The conical damping-roller 95 rotates in a sloping tank 93 pivoted at 87 to the machine frame, its lowest position being adjustable by a stop 90, and the upper surface of the tank is held in an approximately horizontal position by the whole machine being tilted upon adjustable feet 4. Water is supplied to the tank by an inverted bottle 99, the insertion of which without spilling the water is facilitated by a valve 102 which is opened when its stem is pressed upwards by meeting the bottom of the tank. The pressure of the arm 106 upon the flaps of the envelopes is adjustable by a stop 109. Clamping-screws 114 permit lateral adjustable of the damping-device.
