Tread projections.-To secure metal studs to elastic tyres, ,the stems of the studs are wrapped in woven fabric, preferably frictioned canvas, and vulcanized in the elastic material of the tyres. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the fabric wrapping 7 lies between the wearing head 5 and an inner head 6, and the studs are vulcanized in soft rubber plugs 8 in the body of the tyre. The plugs may have recesses 9 at their inner ends, or may not extend to the base of the tyre. The plugs may be formed by wrapping sheet-rubber round the studs. The fabric wrapping may extend beyond the inner heads 6 of the studs, and the faces of these heads may be covered with fabric disks 12, Fig. 8. In the case of pneumatic tyres, the plugs 8 arc not used, and the inner heads of the studs lie on the fabric lining of the tyre, or are separated therefrom by canvas disks 12.
