Multi-stage piston pumps; regulating compression. -Relates to compressors which operate in three or more stages and in which one end of the secondstage cylinder is in constant communication with the delivery valve of the first-stage cylinder and with the inlet valve of the third-stage cylinder, and provides means for varying the output as required. According to the invention, single-acting firststage aod third-stage cylinders a, c are combined with a double-acting second-stage cylinder b, the lower end of the cylinder b being in constant communication through an intercooler m with the delivery valve a<2> of the cylinder a and the inlet valve q of the cylinder c, and the upper end of the cylinder b being adapted for use as an additional first-stage chamber delivering to the intercooler m by way of a valve b<2> and pipe b3. This additional chamber may be put out of action by hand, or automatically in accordance with the pressure in the final receiver, by a device adapted to hold one of the suction valves in the open or closed position. As shown in Fig. 6, a predetermined receiver-pressure acting on the upper side of a spring-pressed piston b<7> is adapted to hold the suction valve b<1> open through the medium of a rod b<9>.
