Abstract
2568. Marsh, N. J., and Sarver, A. Jan. 31. Reciprocating - punch machines; seleetivepunching machines. - Relates to machines for perforating postage stamps to cancel them or to prevent them from being used by persons other than the owners, and consists in special strip-feeding means of the kind actuated by the reciprocating punch, and in punch - selecting means. The machine is adapted to perforate a number of strips of different denominations simultaneously. Each strip is passed through a guide 72 to the corresponding punch 49, 50 and is fed by a roller 65 which bears upon a roller mounted in the base 20, and the perforated strip passes out of the machine through an aperture 76. The roller 65 is turned intermittently by a wheel 69 in gear with a rack 60 secured to an arm 59 carried by the punch 49, a one-way clutch being interposed between the wheel 69 and the roller. The punches 52, Fig. 7, are clamped in a recess of the block 50 by a plate 55 and a thumb-screw 54, and they cooperate with a die secured in a recess in the base 20. Each punch is reciprocated by a pitman 48 and a crank-disk 45 mounted on a short shaft 43 which carries at its other end a toothed wheel 44 and is carried by a standard 41. A shaft 26 turned by a motor 30 extends through the casing 73 and a number of pinions 27 are slidably keyed to it; each pinion is carried by a shifter 31, slidable along a bridge 23 and provided with a handle 40. A sliding catch 36 on each shifter 31 enables this to be locked in position on the bridge when its pinion 27 has been placed in gear with one of the wheels 44. The back and the top of the casing 73 are pivoted at 74 to the front thereof, and sliding doors 77 in the back provide access to the handles 40. The front 75 of the casing is glazed, and a locker to receive stamps, tools, &c. is mounted on the base 20 outside the casing.
