Abstract

2460. Shaw, F. G. Jan. 30. [Cognate Application, 4014/13.] Reels, rod. - A reel, which is arranged so as normally to give a slight check, then to run free, and then to give an increased check, has the operating lever or levers pointing up and down the rod, so that the reel may be easily operated whether mounted in a right or left handed manner. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a toothed wheel 1 is mounted on the winch drum and normally engaged by a pawl 2 pivoted on a frame 4, which is arranged to slide up and down, guided by slots 9 and pins 8. On the opposite side of the frame 4 is a similar pawl 3. Both pawls are acted on by leaf springs 5, 6. The pawl 2 is normally held in engagement with the toothed wheel by a spring 14. Pivoted to the back plate are levers 10, which, when either one or the other is depressed, slide the frame 4 upwards, first disengaging the pawl 2, thus allowing the winch to run free and then, as the movement continues, bringing the pawl 3 into engagement with the wheel 1, the successive movement being felt by the increased pressure of the spring 15 and also being indicated by the difference in sound given out by the two pawls. The tension of the spring 5 may be regulated by means of a screw 17, which slides the block 19 against it. The handles 13 of the levers 10 are made detachable so that the one not required may be removed. In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the normal check is given by a pawl 23, pivoted to the lever 25, which is held against the toothed wheel 32 by means of a spring 31 attached to a lever 26. The action of the pawl is regulable, and preferably of different strengths according to the direction of rotation of the winch. For this purpose, two concentric springs 42, 43 of different strengths are mounted on the spindle 24, and engage on either side of the projection 23<1> of the pawl. On pressing either lever 25, 26, the pawl is raised and the winch is freed; on further pressure being given, the lever 37 is rocked, thus allowing the spring-actuated brake 34 to engage with a brake disk 33 mounted on the winch.
