Abstract

522,389. Brake-operating mechanism. NEATE, R. W., and CHANDLER, F. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35706. [Class 103 (i)] In brake-operating mechanism for trailers, lorries &c. of the type comprising a winding- drum for a brake-actuating cable, an angularlymovable control member, such as a hand-lever, adapted to make uni-directional engagement either directly or indirectly with the drum to move it to any required extent in a brakeapplying direction, and means for normally preventing reverse movement of the drum, such means for preventing reverse movement 'is adapted to be rendered inoperative at will by actuation of a control element (e.g., push-button) carried by the control member and operable throughout substantially the whole range of movement of the latter, whereby the drum may be released for partial or gradual movement, or for complete and instantaneous movement, in a brake-releasing direction. A brake-control cable 5 engages a groove on a drum 4, which is freely mounted on a spindle 3 in a casing 2 and is coupled to the casing or the spindle by a coil spring 9. The drum 4 is provided on one side with ratchet teeth 7 for one-way driving by a spring-urged pawl 13 on a handlever 12, the pawl 13 being knocked out of engagement with the teeth 7 by an abutment 15, Fig. 2, when the lever 12 is swung to the end of its brake-releasing movement. A locking pawl 17 is carried by a pivoted arm 18, which is urged inwards' by one or more springs 19 to engage the pawl 17 with the teeth 7. The pawl 17 is disengaged by means of a depressible 'button 20 at the top of the hand-lever 12, through a rod 22, yoke 23, and roller 24 engaging the arm 18, whereby the drum may be readily released and relocked in any desired position from the handle of the lever 12. The cable 5 is prevented from leaving the groove in the drum 4 by a leaf spring 25.
