Abstract

1903. Foster & Son, J., and Foster, E. H. Jan. 23. Doffing-arrangements.-A carriage 1, Fig. 3, which carries sliding flyer-holders 57, sliding full-bobbin pegs 58, full-bobbin receiving pegs 83, and angularly-movable wires or " setters " 54 for carrying empty bobbins, is slidable in guides 4 at the front of a spinning and like machine, and is raised and lowered by means of a lever 22 operated by a cam, gearing, and clutch mechanism, so controlled as to traverse the carriage vertically and to position it automatically in accordance with the successive stages of the doffing operation. The cam is mounted on a shaft 19, Fig. 17, which is operated from a shaft 9, actuated by hand or by gearing from the loose pulley. The shafts 9, 19 are connected by sprocket gearing 10, 12, a shaft 13, clutch 88, and gearing 14, 18. The shaft 19 carries a disk 86 suitably slotted so that, in certain positions of the disk, a lever 84 may engage with the corresponding slot therein, whereby the clutch 88 is disengaged and the shaft 19 blocked with the carriage at the desired positions in its vertical path. A foot-pedal is provided in order to disengage the lever from the disk and to re-engage the clutch. The flyers are held by fingers 50 and are unscrewed bv turning the spindles by means of gearing 47, 48, and a hand-wheel 41. When the carriage is arrested in its first position, the flyer holders are advanced beneath the unscrewed flyers by rack-and-pinion mechanism 75, and after the lever 84 is released, the subsequent raising of the carriage causes the flyers to be engaged by lugs 62 on the holders, and felt-lined " boots " or rings 64 to embrace the eyes of the flyers for the purpose of retaining the threads therein. The flyer-holders are then retracted and the bobbin-holders advanced over the spindles by rack-and-pinion gearing 76, and the lifter plate is raised so as to place the bobbins on pegs 58 provided with hinged spring clips 67; when the bobbin-holders are retracted, depending portions of the clips engage the shaft of the rack pinion, thereby freeing the bobbins so that they fall on to pegs 83, mounted on a bar which is connected to parallel-motion levers so that it may be drawn to the front of the carriage to facilitate the removal of the bobbins. The lifter plate is raised to its highest doffing position by a cam operated from the shaft 19, and during this operation, the carriage is stationary by reason of the lever 22 engaging with a circular part of its operating-cam. Instead of the pegs 58, a series of depending limbs shaped to conform to the curvature of the bobbin may be used. The empty bobbins are placed on the spindle by rotating the " setters " 54, and the flyers are replaced and screwed upon the spindles by turning the wheel 41. By continuing the rotation of the wheel 41, a few turns are wound on the empty bobbins and the ends are severed by a cutter bar of known form.
