Applied by relaxation of pull.- Railway and like vehicles are stopped in the event of slackening or breakage of the chain by which they are being hauled up an incline, by a frame or bar 1 interposed between the coupling-hook 6 and the chain 2 and provided with hooks 13 for engagement with the track. A spring may be inserted in the connection between the frame or bar 1 and the hook 6. The frame mav be turned into a position in which the hooks 13 are on the upper side and inoperative
