FASTENING AND RELEASING DEVICE FOR LOGGING-CAR CHAINS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed September 8 1910. Serial No. 581,011.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH IV. PRoc'roR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented an Improved Fastening and Releasing Device for Logging-Car Chains, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved attachment for platform cars,
or for trucks and wagons, for securing and releasing log-binding chains used thereon. It is requisite that the means employed shall be strong, durable, and simple in construction, and especially that they shall be adapted for releasing the logging chains without danger to the operator.
My invention pertains to the chain-securing and releasing devices proper, one member of which may be adjusted for releasing a logging chain at such distance therefrom as to insure safety to the operator.
The details of construction, combination, and operation of the invention are as hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of a platform logging car provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4% is a perspective View of the casting forming part of the chain-securing device.
In the several figures, 1 indicates a casting having approximately the form of a rectangular oblong block, the same being provided in its face with a central lengthwise groove 2 and with lateral lugs 3 arranged opposite and separated by a space sufficient to freely accommodate the links of a logging chain. The said lugs are provided with perforations 4: adapted to receive a pin 5 which constitutes the other member of the chain-fastening and releasing device proper.
The block 1 is rigidly and firmly securec to the side of a car-sill y in vertical position as shown, by means of screw-bolts 6 passing through the same at their diagonally opposite corners.
A logging chain as is secured in the manner shown 1n Figs. 1, 2, and 3, those links which are parallel to the lugs or ears 3 lying partly in the groove 2 of the block,
links which is parallel to the face of the I block and between the two adjacent links which are parallel to the lugs 3, thus securing the chain as will be readily understood.
For the purpose of operating, that is to say, withdrawing the pin 5 and thus releasing the chain, at a safe distance from the fastening, and also to provide a sufficiently powerful means for the purpose, I employ a rod 7 and hand-lever 8, the latter being arranged horizontal and pivoted at 9 to the car sill. The rod is pivotally connected with a short rigid upwardly projecting arm 8 of the lever, and its other end is pivoted to the pin 5. By pulling the lever handle downward, it is obvious the pin 5 may be withdrawn from the lugs 3, thus releasing the chain as without any danger to the operator. For greater safety, the levers of the two respective chains employed on a car or other transporting vehicle are arranged adjacent to the ends of the platform as shown in Fig. 1. The free or handle end of lever 8 is supported when not in use by a loop 10 which is pivoted and adapted to swing laterally, so as to adapt it to receiveand release the lever.
As shown, the left-hand lug or ear of the block 1 is made thicker than the opposite lug, since it bears more of the strain incident to fastening and releasing the chain.
Vhat I claim is:-
1. The improved apparatus for the purpose specified, comprising a casting having opposite perforated lugs on its face side and a lengthwise groove extendin between and parallel to said lugs, a pin adapted for in sertion through -the lugs for fastening a chain in the manner described, a rod connected with said pin, and a pivoted handlever with which said rod is connected, as shown and described.
2. The combination with the platform of a transporting vehicle, of a casting secured thereto in vertical position and provided with a lengthwise groove and opposite perforated lugs, a pin adapted for insertion through the lugs, and a slidable rod and pivoted lever connected therewith for operating said pin in the manner described.
3. In an apparatus for the purpose specified, the combination with a perforated casting having a vertical groove to receive a chain, of a pin adapted to traverse said groove, a rod pivoted to the pin, a lever pivoted and arranged normally horizontally, and havlng a lateral arm to Whlch the rod 10 1s plvoted, as shown and described.
JOSEPH WV. PROCTOR.
