Abstract
28,108. Phoenix Dynamo Manufacturing Co., and Pohl, R. Dec. 5. Drawings to Specification. Systems for conversion, employing rotary converters. - In order that the direct-current electromotive force of a rotary converter may be varied, an alternating-current generator or booster is mounted on the shaft of the converter, and the armature winding of the booster is connected between the armature winding of the converter and its slip-rings. The invention consists in designing the booster so that it may be employed as a motor to start up the converter ; for this purpose, it is built without salient field-magnet poles, and its exciting- winding, which is contained in slots in the stator face, serves as a polyphase secondary winding during starting. In one arrangement, the field-magnet winding of the booster consists of a three-phase winding, which, at starting, is closed upon itself through resistances. During normal running, when the field-magnet winding is excited by direct current, two of its phases are joined in series with the third phase across the direct-current bus-bars. A two-phase winding which may act also as a field-magnet winding without changing the connexions may be used. If the alternating-current booster is provided with a series winding to produce compounding effects, this winding may also be designed to serve as a two-phase or three-phase secondary winding during starting, either alone or in conjunction with the main exciting-winding.
