Abstract
27,605. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Jan. 17, [Convention date]. Projectile fuses.-Relates to projectile fuses provided with a retarding - device, which is adapted to be thrown into and out of operation by means of a plug cock mounted at right-angles to the axis of the fuse, and consists in providing a rotatable cock so shaped that in one position the percussion detonator communicates with the bursting-charge through a retarding-patch, while when the cock is rotated out of this position, there is a straight uninterrupted passage from the percussion detonator to the bursting charge; in the case of double fuses for composite projectiles, the cock may be rotated by a definite amount in either direction out of the retarding position, the cock establishing communication, when rotated in one direction, between the time fuse and the bursting-charge, and, when rotated in the other direction, between the time fuse and the shrapnel charge. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in two axial sections at right-angles to each other, the cock B is rotatably mounted in the body A of the fuse, and is cut away at its inner end leaving only a thin and narrow strip of metal b<3> through which is drilled a hole b<4> in alinement, when the cock B is in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the passage a<1> leading from the primer d<1> of the percussion fuse D to the bursting charge. In the hole b<4> is placed a retarding patch to delay ignition. When the cock is rotated so that the part b<3> assumes either the position shown in Fig. 2, or a position on the other side of the primer symmetrical with this position, free communication is established between the primer d<1> and the bursting charge; and at the same time the slow burning time fuse E is placed in the one case in communication with the bursting charge through a passage b<7> in the cock B, and in the other, with the shrapnel charge of the shell through a second passage b<6> in the cock B.
