Glycerine, obtaining.-A process for treating distillery vinasses for the production of glycerine and other useful products consists in drying the vinasses, treating the residue with sulphuric acid in order to liberate the malic and other organic acids from their salts, and then extracting the glycerine with alcohol or other solvent. The alcohol dissolves also the malic and other acids and the betaine, asparagine, and other nitrogenous substances rendered soluble by the sulphuric acid. The solution is treated with lime, and the solvent is distilled off, and the residue is washed with alkaline water to precipitate the malic acid as its calcium salt, the glycerine being subsequently separated from the betaine &c. by washing with hot amyl alcohol. Reference is made to a similar treatment of waste soap lye, to the treatment of vinasses by drying, and the addition of sand, sawdust, peat, cellulose, &c. to render it capable of being washed with solvent, and to a similar addition of phosphates after treatment with sulphuric acid so that the residue may be used as manure.
