[Cognate Application, 977/13.] Synthetic caoutchouc substances are obtained by treating butadiene or its homologues in the presence of carbon dioxide with an alkali metal or mixtures or alloys thereof with one another or with other metals. Products insoluble in butadiene and its homologues are obtained. The dark-coloured product formed during the reaction, and which is converted into a white compound by the action of water or alcohol, may be used for polymerizing further quantities of the dienes. According to one of the examples given, mixtures of sodium with iron, zinc, tin, lead, or nickel may be employed.
