Abstract

25,579. Boult, A. J., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. Nov. 7. Ironing.-An ironing or similar device particularly applicable for operating upon the uppers of turn-shoes is heated by the friction between rotating means which are pressed outwards by their centrifugal force and the wall of a chamber against which they are pressed. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a shaft 2 extends into hollow ironing- blocks 8, 10 fixed to a frame 7. The shaft 2 carries a cage formed by two side plates 12 attached to a rectangular block 14 secured to the shaft. Friction blocks 15 of asbestos are loose between the plates 12 and are pressed outwards during the rotation of the shaft against the inner wall of the block 8, thus heating it. Weights 18 may be placed under the blocks 15 to increase the friction. A thermometer 26 indicates the temperature of the tool. The temperature may be controlled by adjusting, by means of a shutter 24, the current of air drawn through the tool by a fan 20 on the shaft. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the tool is in the form of a roll 28, which can rotate on a fixed sleeve 27, which is heated internally as described with reference to the tool of the first modification. The roll is rotated by moving it laterally until a coned surface at the interior of its end engages a corresponding surface on the end of the shaft. The lateral movement is given to the roll from a treadle through a spring 41, rod 40, rockshaft 36, and an arm 34, which carries a roll 35 to engage the end of the roll 28. A torsion spring 38 lifts the roll 35 when the treadle is released. An oil-pad 45 is carried by an arm 42 pivoted to the main frame, and is adapted to be engaged by a stop 44 resting on the rod 40. When the treadle is not depressed, the stop 44 holds the arm 42 so that the pad only just touches or is held clear of the roll 28. On depression of the treadle to start the rotation of the roll, the pad 45 falls, thus giving an adequate supply of oil to the roll.
