Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT J. COOPER, Jr., ROBERT M. SANDFORD, and WILLIAM BRADY, all citizens of the United States, and residents of New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Removing Waste Gilding, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for removing the excess gilding material from a cover after lettering or figuring has been impressed thereon.
In the process of printing on book covers made of leather or other suitable material, either when gold leaf or oriental gilding is used, the design or lettering is adhered to the book by pressing a sheet of the gilding onto the cover with a hot stamp. The portions of the gilding which it is desired to keep on the cover are thus securely connected to the fiber of thecover, and the remaining portion of the gilding surrounding this portion is left somewhat loosely disposed in close relation with the material of the cover, and yet not secured intimately thereto. It is necessary to remove this excess of material without danger of injuring the book cover.
It is therefore an object of our invention to provide a device which will scrape off the excess material, which may be termed the waste, without danger of injuring the covering.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, readily accessible, and easily operated. v I
A still further object of this invention is to provide a rotary butting member with a movable table adapted to adjust the work into and out of engagement with the buffer, and with means for adjusting the position of the table.
These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view in elevation, partly in section to show the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in front elevation; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates a support, which may be of any suitable structure, as for example the vertical standard shown. This support may be provided with a projecting arm 2, which is superposed above a similar projecting arm 3, in spaced relation therefrom. The arm 2 provides a suitable bearing for a shaft 4, on which is mounted a buffer 5. This buffer 5 may be of any suitable structure, such as a pair of disks 6 and 7, spaced apart from each other by means of a ring 8, in which are provided a series of circumferential openings, through which are adapted to project a plurality of radially-disposed rubber plugs 9. The plates and ring may be secured together in any suitable manner, as by means of screws 10. One of the plates 7 is provided with a clutch member 11, having spaced teeth which engage with corresponding spaced teeth on a clutch member 12 secured to a pulley 13. The pulley 13 may be driven in any suitable manner, as by means of an endless belt 1 1, which runs on a pulley 15. The pulley 15 is secured to a shaft 16, on which are also mounted tight and loose pulleys 17 and 18. A belt 19 may be shifted from the loose pulley 18 to the tight pulley 17, so as to drive the buffer, and it is driven by a pulley 20, operatively connected to a motor 21 or any other suitable source of power.
In order to bring the work in operative juxtaposition to the buffer 5, there is provided a movable work-support 22, which is shown in the form of a table, movably secured to the arm 3. Any suitable means of providing this connection may be utilized. In this case, there is shown a plunger 23, which is slidingly mounted so as to move vertically in a bearing 24, provided in the arm 3. The work-support 22 may be manipulated in any suitable manner, as for example by means of a treadle 25, which may be connected to the work-support in any suitable manner, as for example as will be now described.
The foot treadle 25, which is in the form of a lever pivoted at 26, may be connected by a link 27 to one arm of a lever 28 pivoted to the support 1, as at 29. The other arm of the lever 28 is preferably bifurcated so as to engage in a groove 30 formed in a collar 31. The collar 31 is preferably screwthreaded, so as to engage a screw-threaded extension 32 on the plunger 23. This adjustable connection between the arm 28 and the plunger 23 is to allow for the movement of the work-support 22 to varying levels, to take up the space be tween the work-support and 'the buffer 5 when the latter becomes worn. The worksupport 22 and the treadle 25 may be returned to their original positions by any suitable counteracting means, such as a spring 34. A guard 35 may be provided for the buffer, which will protect the operator and also provent the material removed from the work being buffed, from flying around.
The operation of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description.
The cover with the embossed side uppen most, is placed on the table or work-support 2, and the. buffer started to rotate, if not already rotating. The cover is then brought up into juxtaposition to the buffer 5 by the operator depressing the treadle 25, and held in this position until the one portion of the cover is completed. The other leaf of the cover may be inserted subsequently, and the same operation repeated. The slot through which the treadle 25 passes, in the support 1, will limit the movement of the treadle. If it is desired to vary the upward limit of the travel of the table 22, to allow for the shrinking of the buffer 5, due to its becoming worn, this may be adjusted by means of the collar 31, which can be adjusted on the extension 32. When the foot is removed from the treadle 25, the spring will automatically return it to its original position, and thus lower the table 22 out of working juxtaposition with respect to the buffer 5.
While we have shown one embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims. For example, the connection between the treadle 25 and the table 22 may be of any suitable character, and the adjusting means for vary ing the throw of the table may be located at any other suitable point in this connection.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a support, of a buffer rotatably mounted on said support, means for driving said buffer, a table disposed below said buffer, a plunger for said table, movably connected to said support, a screw-threaded extension on said plunger, a collar, having a screw-threaded connection with said extension, a bifurcated lever engaging said collar, and a treadle adapted to operate said lever.
2. The combination with a support, of a bufi'er rotatably mounted on said support, means for driving said buffer, a table disposed below said buffer, a plunger for said table, movably connected to said support, a screw-threaded extension on said plunger, a collar, having a screw-threaded connec tion with said extension, a bifurcated lever engaging said collar, a treadle adapted to operate said lever in one direction, and a spring for operating said lever in the opposite direction.
3. The combination with a support having a pair of arms projecting therefrom in spaced relation, of a buffer rotatably mounted in one of said arms, tight and loose pulleys rotatably mounted on said support, a belt adapted to be shifted from one to the other of said pulleys, a motor for driving said belt, driving connections between said tight pulley and said buffer, a table located subjacent said buffer, a plunger slidingly mounted in the other of said arms and adapted to support said table, a screw-threaded extension on said plunger, a collar having a groove therein, adjustably engaging said screw-threaded extension, a bifurcated lever engaging in the groove in said collar and pivotally connected to said support, a link connected to said lever, a treadle operatively connected to said link and adapted to operate said lever, and a spring connected to said lever.
