MOTOR' ATTACHMENT ron sEWrNG MACHINES.
Application med December 11,'1926. seria; No; 154,i21.
. This invention relates. to motoii` attach-.- ments for sewing machines, and has for its principal object to provide a clutch mechaz nism of Inovel construction, readily applied 6 to the drive shaft of a motor and the operating wheel of a sewing machine.
Another object of this invention is topro 4vide a motor .attachment for sewing machines, having therein -a novel double grip- 10 pin clutch mechanismadapted to. satisfactor' y control the speed at which the sewing machine is to operate. i Another object of the present invention isto provide a novel clutch mechanism adapt- '15 ed for use in connection-with a. sewing machine and a motor, wherebyA the sewing machine may be conveniently thrown into and out of o eration and may be satisfactorily a regulate as to speed. A further object of the resent 4`invention is to `provide a novel c utch mechanism adapte lor use with a motor and va power driven machine whereby the machine may be operated by the motor at various speeds. A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel "clutch mechanism adapted for use with a motor anda power driven machine whereby the 'machine may l be made to operate at various speeds by the motor or. the'motor may be permitted to op-v erate, independently of the machine.l
Other objects 1more or less apparent willbe disclosed and'described in the following specification and shown in the accompany- 35. in drawing, -in which:
ig. 1 is a bottom plan view-of an attachment .for sewing 'machines embodying myl invention;
- Fi 2 is a slde viewof the same showing- 40 the c utch member-1n cross sectlon and 1na disengaged position; and
' Fi 3 1s an enlarged sectional' view of' clutc member Ashowing the same in an enegaedposition,
l eferring to the drawings,- the numeral 1 designates a motor of' the usual type and construction having -a shaft 2. =Detachably securedtotheshaft 2 by a set screw 3 is a wheel4. Fitting around -the wheel 4 is a iy whee1'5," having 'a shaft 6'integra11y-attached thereto which is rotatably located iny side a bearing 7. The bearing-7 is held in lace on a'. base 8 by asupport'9 which fits vinside aprojection 1001i the base ,i.the said -outside part of thelpad 15 1 movement of any l. ing' 7.
support being held in place and 'adjusted by boltscrew 11. y Located between the wheel 4 and the inside surface 'of the flywheel' 5 is a circular" `str'ucted from leather or other suitable material, havin its inside circumferentialpart 16 positione lential partof the circular disc 13 and the inner surface 'of the said fly wheel. The
projects outbetween the outer circumferwardly beyond the circular disc 13v and is t adapted to contact with the inside surface of wheel A4. When the screw 14' is screwed into the fly wheel 5` the circular disc, becomes slightly' cone shaped owing to. the fact that its outsidecircumferential edge is not permitted to be moved inwardly with its central part because of the location between it and the fly wheel ofthe inside circumferential 'part 16 of the circular disc 15.A The outer circumferential ledge ofthe circular pad 15 is also caused to project oiitwardly `toward -the wheel 4 when the screw 14 is -screwed into the fly. wheely 5, and it is this part of the said pad that firstly contacts with thev said wheel' 4 when the clutchmember is moved toward the same, as will be explained herein. The contact l`.between the fly wheel 5, the circular gripping pad 15 and the circular disc 13 is loose enough to permit the o one of these partsindependentl ofthe other, thereby affording a means. or transferring motion from the wheel 4 tothe fly wheel 5 in a gradual manner.
The. motor 1 is` attached to the base 8 by screws 17 and the base is's'uitably attached by bolts or other means to asewi`n machine or other mechanism -to be operateA V Y Located around the shaft 6' between the beari-n 7 -and the' ily wheel -5'is a-s1eeve18 which'ls adapted to maintain the iiy wheel 1n its proper position in reference to the bear- Located at the* end of the lshaft 6 within an identation' therein, is a steel ball 19, the same being movably held on the end of the said 4 shaft by vend of the said shaft and is suitably secured o come into contact with the same.
thereto by a screw or other means.
VThe base 8 is provided with a projection 21, having therein a: suitable recess for the insertion of a bar 22,`A` the samebeing adjustably held within the projection by a set screw 23.
Pivoted on the bar '22 by means of a pin 24 is a lever 25 which has an extension 26. thereon, the said extension rojecting slightly beyond the ball 19 and eiiig adapted to Forming a -part of the bar 22 is an'extension'member 27, to the end of which is at- A tached one end of a spi-ral wire spring 28.
' the shaft 6,`the ily wheel 5, the circular .The other endy of the s ring rests against the lever 25 and tends to lieep the extension 26 from pressing against the' ball .19.
Attached by 'a screw 29 to the upper part of the lever 25, just below the ily wheel 5 is a leather piece 3() which serves to prevent the revolvin of the y wheel when the device is not to operated.
An extension rod 31 connects the lever 25 and a foot edal or other device for `throwing the machine to be operated through belt 32 into or out of operation.
When the attachment is out of operation the s ring 28 forces the lever 25 upwardly, there y causing the extension 26 to be released from contact, with the ball 19, and the Aleather piece 30 to press against the y wheel 5, thereb preventing the said fly wheel from revo ving.
yTo. cause the sewing machine or other mechanism to operate, the rod 31 is pulled in a downward direction, thereby carrying with it lever 25, which causes the extension 26 to move inwardly and be forced against the ball 19. The wheel 4 whi h is secured to the shaft 2 revolves with the said shaft upon the movement ofthe motor. As the balld19,
lThe construction of the clutch mechanism with the gripping pad 15 located around thecircular disc '18 in the manner described, en
, ables the operation of the sewing machine Vor y other mechanismat any desired'speed, de-
pendent solelyuponA the downward force applied to the rod 31.
includedwithin the spirit of the appended claims.
