Abstract
24,248. Noll, J., and Del Mar, E. Oct. 23. Diaphragms; stylus mountings; stopping; stopping feed and raising stylus; telephone signals; recording.-Relates to apparatus for recording telephone and other messages and sounds electrically in which the diaphragm is an adjustable strip, and the feednut is disengaged simultaneously with lifting the stylus. Fig. 1 is an end elevation, Fig. 3 shows a vertical section, and Fig. 4 a bottom plan view. The sound-box frame 18 is supported by a flange 16 on an horizontal guide-bar 1 forming part of the main frame, and has a sleeve 20 sliding on a tube 2 carrying the feed-screw 3, which is driven by gears 15, 14, 13, 12 from the power-driven shaft 4 carrying the mandrel 10 and record 11. A clutch is mounted on the shaft 4 to start the record and feed-screw. The strip diaphragm 22, preferably of iron and carrying a soft - iron armature 21, is mounted on knife-edges 26 and can be stretched by a screw and block 23. A pair of electro-magnets 19 is partially surrounded by a horseshoe permanent magnet 20<a>. A floating weight 27 pivoted at 46 carries in a recess 28 the recording-stylus lever 30 pivoted at 29 and connected by a link 31 with the diaphragm 22. A removable weight 33 is secured to the end of the floating weight. A hand-lever 40 recessed in the frame 18 over the feed-screw 3 has a cam-surface 40<1> adapted to engage with a camsurface 39 on a spring-pressed bifurcated rod 38 to disengage the bifurcations, which act as teeth, from the feed-screw 3. In the position shown in Fig. 3, the sound-box is being traversed by the feed-screw, and the recording-stylus 30 rests on the record 11 and records the sounds. When, however, the lever 40 is turned into a vertical position, Fig. 1, the feed-nut is disengaged and another cam-surface on the lever 40 presses a pivoted arm 41 against a rod 42 controlled by a spring 43, which presses against a lever 45 integral with the floating weight 27, and raises this weight. A spring-pressed ball 50 entering holes 49 on a flange 48 holds the lever 40 in its two positions.
