Electric sound-boxes.-A phonograph is adapted to be used either for recording and reproducing telephone messages or for use independently of the telephone circuit as a dictating machine, without interchanging or removing any of its parts. For this purpose, the sound-box, Fig. 3, has in. addition to the usual speaking tube 4 or the like, an electromagnet 12 adapted to be connected to the line wires of a telephone system. The diaphragm 5, which is adjacent to the magnet-poles,. and is connected as usual to a lever 7 carrying the recording and reproducing tools is thus. adapted to be vibrated electromagnetically when the magnet is switched into the telephone circuit; when the apparatus is electrically disconnected, the diaphragm is vibrated directly by sound transmitted through the tube &c. 4, and also serves for reproducing from the record 10. To connect theelectromagnet in the circuit, either in series or parallel with an ordinary telephone receiver, a. switch is provided, comprising a disc G, Fig. 2, which carries two metal segments o, p coacting with fixed pairs of contact-fingers, one pair l. m being directly connected to the electromagnet of the sound-box and the other pair q, d being. adapted to be connected to the telephone line wires 1, 2 through a plug and jack k.
