Before opening the firedoor j for firing purposes, a rod k is drawn forwards bv hand to open a valve ! i in the steam-pipe h, or the valve may be opened by the movement of the fire-door, to admit steam to the chamber d from which it passes through orifices c' into the furnace where it serves to consume smoke.
