Abstract
22,674. Walker, A, Oct. 5. Boat-launching apparatus. - A launching-beam 1, universally jointed to the ship's side at 3, is automatically maintained at a regular height above the water irrespective of the rolling of the vessel. The beam is controlled by means of a cable passed around pulleys 5,18 on the launching- beam and a derrick 1<a> and then around the pulleys 15, 16 of an hydraulic cylinder 12 and ram 11. A bellcrank lever 6 on the end of the beam 1 has one arm supporting a weight 8 while the other arm is connected up to the valve 13, 14 controlling the hydraulic ram, so that, should the roll of the vessel tend to carry the beam away from the water, the weight 8 causes the valve to open. The return roll causes a slackening of the cord 9 and allows a weight 19 on the valve to open the same to admit pressure-fluid, thus keeping the beam at a constant height above the water. The boats are supported from trollies 21 running on the beam and on an inboard extension of the same. Automatic disengaging-gear comprises hooks 24 connected by a bar 25 weighted at 26. This weight falls over to release the boat when waterborne. The rope 27 controlling the carrier is wound around a drum controlled by a weight, so that the carrier is automatically returned when the boat is released. The invention may be applied to the construction of landing-gangways.
