Abstract
22,300. Wagner, H. Oct. 1. Sticks; ties.-The frames of umbrellas having eccentrically-disposed sticks are supported in all directions by means of lateral stays or struts. Fig. 2 shows an umbrella stick comprising portions a, b connected by a tubular or channel link e. The connecting-pins f move in slots g in the link when the umbrella is opened and closed, the ends of the portions a, b being inserted in the link in the closed position. Lateral stiffening is obtained by means of stays h, which are pivoted to the stick portion a and secured at i to the frame stiffeners r, or, if desired, to the ribs a; the stays lie in the link e when the umbrella is closed. The stays may comprise bands, chains, &c., the upper ends being secured to the ribs or stiffeners, and the lower ends to the stick, as by means of a ring slidable on the stick. The bands &c. may be permamently connected at their ends to the stick, ribs, or stiffeners and be tensioned by being shortened or otherwise tightened.
