An umbrella or sunshade of special artistic form comprises ribs 10, Fig. 4, which are of variable length according to the shape of the cover and are pivoted, as shown in Fig. 6, so as to swing laterally upon pins 8 carried by plates 7 attached to the handle 5, which is pivoted at 6 in short slots in plates 3, 4 secured to the stick 1. Rib trusses 9 slidably embrace the ribs between pins 11 and stops 12, Fig. 6; the positions of the stops 12 largely determine the curvature of the ribs when the umbrella &c. is open. The umbrella &c. is held closed, as shown in Fig. 3, by means of a band 21 and by a spring catch 22 on the plate 3 engaging over the edge of one of the plates 7, lugs 23 on the plate 7 bearing against the plates 3, 4. By swinging the handle 5 into the position shown in Fig. 4, in which it is held by a pin 17 engaging slots 16 in the plates 3, 4, the ribs are moved laterally against the action of springs 18, Fig. 6, and curved by means of cords 14, which are attached at 15 to the stick 1 and also to tension cords 13 extending between the rib tips and the trusses 9. The cover 19 may be reinforced by an edge cord 20. Figs. 9 and 10 show examples of covers having a leaf form, the special ribs 10<a> shown in Fig. 10 having their divided ends 10<b> united to the adjacent standard ribs.
