22,249. Powley, M., Powley, R., and Powley, W. Sept. 30. Bottles, washing.-The machine for washing bottles described in Specification 15,688/11 is modified in the following respects. (1) The internal rotary brushes are connected to the reciprocating members, and the end or bottom brushes are fixed; (2) the exterior of each bottle is brushed by a single large rotary brush fitted beneath the bottles and rotated in the same direction as the internal brushes. The bottles are pressed down on to the brush by rollers which also deflect them so that they are not in line either vertically or horizontally with the internal brush spindles. In the four - -bottle machine shown, the reciprocating movement of the internal brush shafts 25 is obtained by means of links 23 which connect them to superposed shafts 13 reciprocated by crank mechanism at the ends of the shaft 8 driven by a worm on the main driving-shaft. The rotary movement of the internal brush shafts is obtained by gearing them to the external brush shafts 35 which are rotated by trains of spurwheels gearing with a common spur-wheel on the main driving-shaft. In operation, the necks of the bottles are placed against sockets 44 on adjustable cross-heads arranged so that the bottom end of each bottle abuts against the conical surface of one of the rollers 45 near its outer end. The forward movement of the internal brushes pushes the bottles away from the sockets until the ends abut against the fixed brushes 57, while the return movement brings the bottles back again to the sockets ready for removal. Additional plain or conical rollers 46 prevent excessive lateral movement of the bottles. To permit the machine to be used for bottles of varying diameter, the rollers are carried by adjustable pivoted arms mounted on the framing.
