Abstract
21,756. Reade, M. T. Sept. 24. [Cognate Applications, 23,076/12 and 1718/13.] Boat raising, lowering, and disengaging gear.- Boats stowed athwart ship are handled by a single outboard swinging davit hinged at a considerable distance below the boat deck and adapted when in an horizontal position to serve as a gangway providing access to the boat. The #-shaped davit B consists of two longitudinal members pivoted to the ship's side at C. The longitudinal members carry staging suitably braced to build up a gangway, and this staging is cut away in a V-shape so that the boat can swing therethrough during lowering operations, which are controlled by topping-lifts H. The boat is stowed athwart ship and is hauled under the davits by pairs of falls J, K which pass over pulleys N, 0 arranged at the basal extremities of triangular frames F pivoted to a distance-piece between the members B at the davit head. The falls are led from the davit head back along the davit to a pulley D on the pivots C and are finally conducted to a winch M. Excessive swinging of the frames is checked by a device comprising a sleeve P sliding on the base G of the frames and connected by a link Q to the davit. Arrangements are also made for turning these frames wholly inboard when required. In a modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the horizontal position of the boat during swinging and lowering operations is positively secured. For this purpose, links 2 fast on the distance-piece 5 to which the boat is secured are connected at their free ends by stays 3 to a fixed point T below the pivot points D of the davit. This construction ensures that the link 2 is always vertical during swinging operations, and consequently the boat secured to the same rigid axis is kept horizontal. In order that the boat may be launched in any angular position relatively to the ship, a frame 4 is secured to the distancepiece 5 by a tubular pivot 6. The frame 4 is rotated between the longitudinal members of the davit by an endless chain passing round a pulley 12 on and controlled by worm-gear on board. The falls are carried from the boat over pulleys 7 on the frame 4. then up the tubular pivot 6, over pulleys 8, 9, and back along the davit to the winch. The fall from the inner part of the boat is passed over a pulley 16 some distance below the pulley 15, over which is passed the fall from the outer part of the boat. This arrangement causes the outer fall to be slack when the boat is brought inboard, and consequently the inboard end of the boat is higher than the outboard end, which facilitates handling. This slack is afterwards taken up by the snatch-block 20, which is used when bringing the boat to its inboard position on the chocks 18. The disengaging-gear comprises U-shaped members 24 attached to uprights 22. Sections 25 of the members are hinged and take through the uprights and are locked by pins 26 passing through the thwarts 23.
