Abstract

20,232. Strauss, J. B. Sept. 5. Bridges.-An arrangement for lifting the central part 1 of a bridge vertically comprises a pair of levers 4 pivoted at 5 and jointed at the inner ends 6<a> to the central portions of connecting-pieces 6 from which the bridge 1 is suspended. The upper ends of the pieces 6 are connected by links 9 and counterweights 10 to the rear ends of the levers 4, which are provided with counterweights 12. The centre of gravity of each counterweight 10 is arranged to lie in the same straight line as the pivots 5 and 7. The arrangement is such that when the lifting-mechanism is operated by gear 13, 14 the points of suspension of the bridge 1 move in vertical lines.
