Abstract

Dynamometers, rotary-absorption.-The size and magnitude of the torque absorbed by a dynamometer are varied by the provision of adjustable baffle plates or surfaces 6, adjacent to the admission-inlet of the rotor 2, or at any point in the path of the water contained within the stator 3. Adjustment of the baflle-plates from the exterior of the apparatus by the rotation of rings 10 engaging the outer extremities of the pivoted baffles, or by any other means, varies the momentum and the direction of flow of the liquid entering the rotor ; the apparatus may thus be used with the shaft 1 rotated in either direction, and by a suitable adjustment the running of the rotor may be rendered noiseless. The baffle-plates may consist of a solid portion rigidly attached to the stator and a resilient portion. The reactive torque produced in the stator is balanced as usual by means of an arm and a connected spring-balance.
