Abstract

18,278. Bedard, T. E., Bedard, J. B. R., Bedard, P. E., and Hebert, J. A. H. Aug. 8. Levers and rods, locking.-Relates to locking- devices in which an actuated member is antomatically locked so that it can only be moved by the actuating-member, and in which rollers, balls, or the like are normally free to jamm into engagement between recesses in the actuated members and a fixed casing, but are prevented from jamming when the actuating-member is moved. In a construction of steering-gear for motor-vehicles, the operated member 2 carries a plate 3 having concave recesses, rollers 19 being placed in the recesses so as normally to jamm between the plate 3 and the fixed casing 20, and resist movement of the operated member. When it is desired to move the operated member, the rollers are held in the centres of their recesses by means of the two fingers 12, 17 which are then moved away from one another towards the ends of slots 6 in a plate 5 carried by the operated member 2. The movement of the two fingers 12,17 is effected by some lost motion of the operating- member 1 taking place before the member 2 moves. This lost motion is utilized to cause a relative rotation of the loose plates 11, 15 which are placed one above the other and carry the fingers 12, 17 respectively. The plate 11 is formed with slots 14, which accommodate (a) projections 18 on the plate 15 and (b) pawls 10 pivoted to the undersides of a plate 7 fixed to the operating-member 1. Movement of the operating-member and pawls 10 first causes relative rotation of the plates 11, 15 so as to make the fingers 12, 17 engage the ends of the slots 14, and further movement operates the member 2. The casing is of spherical shape and consists of two shells, engaging a spherical recess in the plates 27, 28.
