Abstract

17,957. Butterfield, E., [Butterfield, P. F.]. Aug. 3. Spikes for securing railway rails to sleepers are made of rectangular section, and the shanks B are twisted a quarter - turn between the head A and the point C, which is pyramidal. The sides may be slightly concave. The pitch of the twist is equivalent to one turn in a length of thirty-three times the diameter of the spike.
