Plug cocks. - In an internal - combustion engine inlet and exhaust are controlled by separate multi-ported oscillating-cylindrical or cup-shaped valves, such as B, arranged with their axes parallel with the cylinder axis and worked from face-cams Q on a shaft Q<1>. The valves may be arranged outside their seatings as shown in Fig. 1, or inside of them as shown in Fig. 8. Holes U are provided in the closed end of the valve to admit pressure to the space D for balancing, and the valve is split at T so as to be resilient. Oil for lubricating is supplied through the hollow valve spindle to vertical grooves formed in the valve B and valve-seat C. To prevent pre-ignition due to over-heating of the exhaust valve, a pin-valve 15 is provided by which water from the cooling- jacket can be sprayed on the valve.
