Abstract

16,851. Keevil, A. July 19. Oscillations of the draught appliances, arrangements of springs for absorbing. - The shafts of a two-wheeled vehicle are mounted to allow both vertical and lateral oscillations under the control of springs. Fig. 2 shows a plan of an arrangement in which each shaft 3 is pivoted on a vertical pivot 5 carried by a member 6, which is connected by an horizontal pivot 21 to a bracket 7 on the vehicle. The rear ends of the shafts are slidingly clamped over the curved ends of a spring bar 4 which is connected at its centre to a bracket 14 fixed to the front of the vehicle. Springs 17 connect the ends of the shafts to a pin 18 beneath the centre of the spring bar, the shafts being spaced apart by a bar 15, and the lateral movement being limited by stops 16 formed on the ends of the bar 4. Curved members 20 may connect the outer ends of the brackets 7 to the bracket 14. The bracket 14, instead of being rigidly connected to the vehicle may be mounted between vertical coiled springs in a box secured to the dashboard. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which both shafts are rigidly connected to a central pillar 31 pivoted vertically in a horizontally pivoted member 33. Mounted on the lower end of the pillar 31 is a longitudinal bar 36, which is slidingly clamped at its rear end over a curved bar 37. The bar 37 has slotted ends which work over vertical rods 38 under the control of springs 43, 44. Springs 48 connect the rear end of the bar 36 to the sides of the vehicle frame so as to absorb lateral oscillations.
