Reciprocating-saw machines; tree-felling.- Comprises a sledge a carrying an engine b operating, through speed-reducing gear e, e<1>, flywheels f, f<1>, and clutches d, d<1>, a rocking arm h for reciprocating the saw i, and a countershaft n carrying winch-heads o for receiving a hauling- rope for transporting the sledge. The fly-wheel f is connected to the rocking arm h by a connecting-rod g, the connexion being made at a greater or less distance from the crank-pin so as to vary the inclination of the saw, and the telescopic connexion between the saw and the rocking arm may be secured at various distances from the rocking-arm pivot so as to vary the length of the saw-stroke. The saw cuts only during the tension stroke, and a spring k may be arranged to act on the rocking arm to equalize the work on the engine. A split tube is preferably applied to the back of the saw blade, when commencing the cut, to impart longitudinal rigidity. The apparatus may also be used for felling trees, the saw being secured between opposite ends of a wire or rope, which passes round guide-blocks attached to fixed objects and is operated by the rocking arm.
