Abstract

16,535. Werth, F. July 15. Roller-conveyer apparatus; cells; electrodes; electrolytes, circulating. -Wires, strips, or plain or figured rods, sheets, or the like, are passed between adjustable anodes h, Figs. 1 and 3, corrugated so as to form channels which may be completely separated, and slightly inclined to the horizontal, so that the material to be plated or cleaned is not bent to any considerable degree. The anodes are perforated and are faced with porous non-conducting material or otherwise insulated; they may be of soluble or insoluble material, for instance copper coated with lead. The channels may be round or oblong in section. Single anodes may be used, and may be shaped to form channels narrowing towards their open tops. The wires or the like may alternatively be arranged in a vertical series between corrugated anodes hinged together at their lower edges. Plates may be placed between slightly corrugated anodes, either the plates or the anodes being reciprocated through half the width of a corrugation. Alternatively, or in addition, the anodes may be reciprocated at right-angles to the cathode surface. Porous material may be placed over the cathode plate instead of the anodes. As shown, the lower anodes are supported on perforated plates, which rest at their upper ends on vertically-adjustable shelves g. Other perforated plates, made in parts separately removable, cover the upper anodes. The wires or strips pass over conducting-rollers i of bronze and under other rollers j<1>, d, of which the middle one d and optionally the outer one j<1> are adjustable vertically. Electrolyte may be projected along the anode channels from nozzles p, or may flow from lateral extensions o of the tank to a central pit t; the middle roller d, not being immersed, may then serve as conductor. Alternatively, the electrolyte may be kept in motion by blowing in air.
