Abstract

Colorimeters; colour filters.-An apparatus for matching and determining colours and shades of colours comprises a number of superposed colour wedges adjustable so that a beam of light passing through them is given various colours and shades by the variable thickness of the separate wedges. In the form shown in Fig. 10, three wedges 1, 1<a>, 1<b>, of red, blue, and yellow glass, are separately adjustable between an aperture 10 through which a beam of light is directed by a mirror 13 and a sight aperture 12 in the case 5. The wedges taper in both longitudinal and transverse directions. The material 19 to be matched is placed on the top of the case and viewed through a tube 18, and, when the colour has been matched by adjusting the wedges longitudinally, the precise shade is determined by adjusting sight apertures 16, 21, Fig. 11, transversely. The wedges may be stepped in one direction, or may consist of containers of plain glass filled with coloured liquid. Fig. 6 shows a wedge consisting of a glass case filled with coloured liquid up to an apex 26<a> which is supported on a knife-edge, the wedge being adjusted by tilting. Fig. 4 shows an annular wedge tapering both radially and circumferentially. Fig. 8 shows a wedge comprising plain glass sheets 37, 38 pivoted at 39, pressed open by springs 43, and containing coloured liquid between them, the angle between the plates being adjusted by a snail cam 46.
