[Cognate Application, 28,372/12.] Sashes balanced by weights; sash weights.- Sliding window sashes are balanced by cords or chains passing over pulleys or sprocketwheels mounted at or about the level of the meeting rails, and connected to sash weights, means being provided for simultaneously locking the upper and lower sashes. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the sashes are balanced by chains d passing over sprocket - wheels e to weights f, the upper ends of which are slotted at h, Fig. 8, to allow the weights to rise past the sprocket - wheels. The sashes are locked by pins l, passed through the inside lining of the window - frame into holes k in the sprocketwheels e, the spindles q of which are mounted in inclined slots p in the casings g, Fig. 6, so that the sprockets can be pushed back into the casings when the sashes are inserted in the window frame. The locking pin l may be provided with a pair of cranked portions l<X>, as shown in Fig. 10, for engagement with the holes k. In the modification shown in Fig. 12, the chains and sprocket-wheels are replaced by cords r and pulleys s, the sashes being locked by the engagement of a sliding bolt u, mounted in a casing t on the pulley-stile, with notched bars or racks v mounted on the sashes.
