Abstract

14,530. Berkeley, C. A. J. June 21. Collapsible boats.-A collapsible boat is formed of flexible steel frames e extending from stem to stern and supported by transverse ribs f, the whole being covered with flexible waterproof material or resilient metal sheathing. To open the boat, a rope q passing through a pulley p<1> and attached to a hinge h<1> of a hinged device h, Fig. 1, when pulled upon, causes the hinged device to expand, Fig. 2, the hinged device then being held in position by a centre thwart k. To prevent the boat from closing, hinged thwarts l attached to frames e at each side of the boat are extended when the boat is opened, Fig. 4, and prevented from collapsing by brackets m, which are swung round into position by rods n attached to the bottom boards g. Additional means for preventing the boat from collapsing consists of stretchers 0, Fig. 7, which are pivoted in the centre and swung into and fixed in the athwartships position O<2> when the boat is open and are folded along the keel a when the boat is closed. Two lines such as q may be attached to hinged devices such as h at the centre and stern, the free ends being connected to the boat falls; the weight of the boat when swung, causes its sides to expand.
