Abstract

13,626. Perkins, A. June 11. Belts; belt fastenings.-Relates to V-shaped driving-belts for use on motor-cycles or for other purposes, in which leather or other pyramidal gripping blocks 5 are attached to a flexible backing comprising two lengths 1, 2 of leather or equivalent material such as rubber and canvas &c., between which is arranged one or more lengths of stranded wire 4, and consists in securing the various parts together by bifurcated rivets 6, the limbs of which straddle the wire 4 as shown in Fig. 3. To prevent relative movement, the wire may be provided with projections &c. which become embedded in the leather &c. A metal bed for the wire 4 may be formed by lining the groove with a metal strip, or metal staples or pieces may be inserted at intervals along the belt to serve the purpose. To facilitate alteration of the length of the belt, bifurcated screws carrying nuts may be used instead of rivets at the parts affected. To provide means to secure the ends of the belt together, each end of the wire 4 projects and is passed through a transverse roller-shaped block 7, being wedged and soldered therein as indicated in Fig. 6. The blocks 7 are connected to the belt ends by U-shaped straps 7<a> secured by the end rivets 6 as shown in Fig. 2. The blocks 7 are then connected to one another upon each side of the central straps 7<a> by plates 10, Fig. 4, passing on to shoulders 9, Fig. 6, being retained in position by secondary plates 12, Fig. 5, which engage grooves 11 in the blocks. A spring clip 13 on each plate 12 engaging a projection or recess 14 on the adjacent plate 10 secures all the parts together. In a modified form of connecting - plate, shown in Fig. 9, an enlarged opening 17 permits the plate to be passed on to each of the blocks 7 in turn, the narrow slots 16 then engaging annular grooves such as 11 in the blocks. An alternative form of plate is shown in Fig. 11. The fastening-devices may be made in a series of progressive lengths in order to enable the length of the belt to be altered. They may carry blocks of leather or other gripping- material.
