Microphones; telephones; relays and repeaters, non-circuit-closing; telephones, mounting and supporting.-A telephone receiver which can also be used as a transmitter has its diaphragm so mounted that the marginal portions, upon which the magnet acts, are free to vibrate, these portions being split into tongues responsive to the different components of a sound, the centre of a diaphragm acting on a microphone in a local circuit to amplify the effect of the speaking currents. The diaphragm 22 is clamped between rings 24, 25, and the edges are cut into tongues 27 of different lengths as shown in Fig. 4. The magnet is formed of an iron ring 13, Fig. 2, with four coils, two inside and two out, one coil of each pair being connected in the line circuit, the others in circuit with a battery and the microphone 15; the local and line circuits are coupled together by an induction coil. Instead of a solid iron annulus 13, one formed of iron wire wound on a series of pins projecting from an iron ring may be used. The device may be used as a relay by placing a similar magnet and microphone, similarly connected up to a second circuit, on the other side of the diaphragm. Specification 3144/00 is referred to.
