Abstract

11,669. McVittie, R. B. May 16. Leakage, preventing; staircases; hatches.- All openings in ships' decks are provided with means for closing them in a water-tight manner so that each of the lowermost decks may serve as another bottom to the ship. The invention is described with reference to staircases and lift wells. The stairways a<3> are hinged to the deck a and are constructed with steps a<4> as air-tight chambers a<5>, and an additional chamber or float a<6> is provided at the back of the steps a<4>. The lower end a<7> drops into a recess into the lower deck a<2>. A curved guide b, with which rollers b<1> engage, ensures the staircase rising so as to engage properly with the opening in the upper deck, even if the ship be pitching and rolling. A projecting rib b<3> at the top step engages a recess b<4> and makes a water-tight joint. Pivoted clips c<1> retain the staircase in its raised position. The entry of water above the lower deck a<3> raises the staircase to close the opening. Lift wells in the ship are fitted with doors similarly constructed and normally held open by catches provided with floats, which release the doors upon the entry of water, allowing the doors to close the openings of the lift wells.
