Yarns, warping and beaming.-Surplus warps b, Figs 2, 3, and 4, on the beam B, namely, those that are not required to be woven into the fabric, are passed over the whip - roll and wound up on a flanged drum or drums E, Figs. 3 and 4, on a shaft F parallel to the whip-roll, or on a flangeless drum E, Fig. 2, on a stud F at right-angles to the whip-roll. Each drum is frictionally driven by a cord I, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, passing over a grooved pulley H on the drum and connected at one end to a rear harness C, the other end being provided with a weight J. When the harness rises, it first moves more quickly than the weight J descends, thus slackening the cord I, so that the drum is rotated backwards less than it is rotated forwards; the surplus warps are thus wound up as the weaving proceeds. The shaft F, Figs. 3 and 4, may have spindles c resting in open bearings d in brackets G, and the flanged drums are removed when full, or the shaft is removed from its bearings. The warps may be guided to the flangeless drum E, Fig. 2, by a guide-eye K. The pulley H is provided with a guard L.
