10,657. Gualtierotti, G. May 4. Resistances.-A mould for casting silicon or silicon alloys is arranged to allow free contraction of the casting. For this purpose, the mould is made in two hinged parts a, b, Fig. 1, one of which has a movable wedge-shaped part i, Figs. 5 and 6, which can be withdrawn by means of a screw l and handle m to allow of contraction of the casting. Molten silicon, to which may be added not more than 18 per cent of a metal such as iron, nickel, copper or magnesium, is poured into an opening c. The castings may be in the form of rings, spirals, or bars for use in rheostats, or in the form shown in Fig. 8, for singeing threads and cotton fabrics electrically.
