Parchment paper is produced by treating raw paper, preferably so - called artificial parchment paper such as is obtained from hard-boiled Mitscherlich cellulose, with dilute acids at a temperature of about 100‹ C. Organic acids, acid salts, and such salts as exert a similar action by dissociation in dilute aqueous solution may be used, in some cases with formaldehyde. Sulphuric acid up to tenth-normal may be used, and aluminium sulphate together with formaldehyde is also mentioned. The paper to be treated may be finished or in course of manufacture, and may be sized or unsized.
