Uppers, machines for.-A machine for forming the bulge of the toe in the vamp of a boot or shoe prior to the lasting operation comprises a toe-shaping die C<4>, a co-operating die formed as an aperture B<1> in a work-support B<2>, and an upper-restraining device C' adapted to clamp the upper round the aperture B<1> and to give it up under the stress caused by the entry of the toe-shaping die into the aperture. The toeshaping die C<4> is attached by a screw C<3> to a carrier C<1>, which is moved relatively to the work-support by a toggle mechanism C<2>. A work-clamp C<7> is attached to a plate C<5> pressed down upon the shoulder of the toe-shaping die by a spring C<6>, and extends beyond the die C<4> to engage and clamp the work upon the worksupport B before the die engages it. The worksupport B, which preferably has an inclined upper face B<2>, is secured to the frame by dowelpins A<3>. In a modified form, the clamping plate is formed in sections, each acted upon by an independently adjustable spring. In a further modification, grippers adapted to close on the upper as the toe-shaping die is brought down, replace some of the sections of the clamping plate. The grippers can be drawn forward by the upper against the pressure of adjustable springs.
