Abstract

Amides of arylcinchoninic acids are produced by the action of ammonia or of a primary or secondary aliphatic amine upon alpha - phenylcinchoninic acid chloride or homologues or derivatives thereof. In an example diethylamine is used. The products are useful in medicine. Arylcinchoninic acids and chlorides thereof.- Arylcinchoninic acids are prepared by treating aniline or its homologues or derivatives with pyroracemic acid and benzaldehyde or its derivatives, such as salicylaldehyde, or pmethoxy-, or m - ethoxy-benzaldehyde. They may also he prepared by treating isatin with aromatic ketones. The chloride of alpha-phenylcinchoninic acid is prepared by the action of thionyl chloride upon the acid. The chlorides of alpha-p-methoxyphenyl- and alpha-m-ethoxyphenylcinchoninic acids are stated to melt at 230‹ C. and 248‹ C. respectively.
