Abstract

10,230. Craig, A. B. April 30. Tyres, cooling by circulation; of fluid.-Air or other cooling fluid is circulated through the interior of a pneumatic tyre, or through a tube within the tyre, by a pump or fan carried by the wheel. In one arrangement, the inner tube 3 is connected to a coiled tube 6 mounted on or in a casing 9 secured to the hub, and the air in the tube and coil is circulated by means of a pump or fan 21 arranged within the casing. The fan may be driven by a gear wheel 30 on the axle 10 meshing with a wheel 29 on the fan shaft 23, or by any other form of gearing, or by an electric motor connected to a battery or dynamo driven by the engine of the vehicle. An arrangement for driving the fan by a motor is shown in Fig. 7, in which an arm 40 carried by a motor 20<a> adjacent to the fan casing 20 is fitted with a grooved wheel 40<a> running on a wheel 41 insulated from, but secured to, a sleeve 43 on the axle. Current is supplied to the wheel 41 and returns through the sleeve 43. A guard 42 is provided. In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 6, a cooling-tube 33 of rubber, metal, &c. is located between the rim and a fold 34 of the inner tube and connected to the coil 6, and salt-water, alcohol, or other liquid is circulated through it and the coil by the pump 21. When the tube 33 is of metal, the coil may be omitted and the tube may be open to the atmosphere, the pump being connected directly by branch pipes with the tube. The outer cover and inner tube may be detached without removing the cooling-tube.
